I love Thea Gilmore who starts her new tour at The Sage on Tuesday 30 May, three days before the release of her fifteenth album, ‘The Counterweight.’

So often thought to be on the cusp of a breakthrough to the mainstream, Gilmore has remained a deeply respected serious artist, one whose sharp, serious lyrics were perhaps too much for the simpler world of the pop charts.

While fans always like to be in the know about the next big thing only to have a pang of disappointment when the secret is out it is certainly time for the wider world to learn about Thea.

Evidently she thinks so too as the new album marks a departure for the Oxfordshire singer, who employs an ipad and piano ahead of the acoustic guitar that has been the staple accompaniment to her work thus far.

This is Gilmore coming out of her comfort zone and trying something new. The serious subject matter is still very much there but the approach is different and all the more exciting for that.

I’ve seen Thea a few times before and she’s always been excellent but her tour opener at the Sage is going to be an eye (and ear) opener.

I’d thought Thea might be on in Hall One but she’s in the smaller Hall Two. If this album does what she hopes it may be your last chance to see her in a small intimate venue.
