Chris Rea, Newcastle City Hall
Chris Rea – probably more than any other modern-day musician – is eminently qualified to sing the blues.
After a life-or-death operation seven years ago, which has left him a shadow of his former self, the Teesside star has fought back to full touring fitness. It’s a remarkable story for 57-year-old Chris.
And at Newcastle City Hall – his hallowed venue – he gave a masterclass in blues guitar playing.
He hardly said a word for the first hour of his two-hour set. He didn’t need to. He simply played superb slide guitar on numbers from his latest album including It’s Behind You, Where the Blues Come From, and Legacy Blues.
The hits came later. He got everyone on their feet with Let’s Dance (you’re never too old to dance, he reminded everyone) which followed his other classics Josephine, Stainsby Girls and the Road to Hell. Vintage Rea.
