Sunderland Empire Theatre

9 January

I thought I’d take a chance on Abbamania at the Empire. By the interval I was sending an SOS, as this was a show that appeared to me to be merely going through the motions.

Thankfully it improved in the second half, and by the time we were saying ‘Thank you for the music’ in the encore I have to say I’d enjoyed it.

The two girls in the production were the dancing queens of the performance – although the audience had a good go too and needed no prompting to join in.

Abbamania isn’t a show as such – more a simple performance of hit songs by a tribute act.

But the fact that, in a concert of almost two hours, every song was a big hit is a reminder of just how massively successful Abba were when they were the name of the game in the Seventies and early Eighties.

Abbamania is on at Whitley Bay Playhouse on Friday 17 April so, if you missed the show at Sunderland, there’s a second chance to put on a shiny shell suit and some platform boots and you too can be a super trouper!
