Nominated this month for a Brit Award in the International
Group category, First Aid Kit are a Swedish duo who play folk-rock based around
sweet harmonies that Simon & Garfunkel would be proud of. Indeed they sing
a version of Simon’s ‘America’ here, having explained how nervous they’d been
singing it in front of him when he was honoured with The Polar Music Prize in
2012 – the same year First Aid Kit’s song ‘Emmylou’ was named in the top 10
songs of the year by Rolling Stone magazine.
The City Hall was packed by an audience thrilled to be there
to see a band very much on the up and destined for more and more success. Songs from their new album ‘Stay Gold’ were
interspersed with highlights from their breakthrough second record ‘The Lion’s
Roar’ with ‘To a Poet’, ‘Blue’ and ‘Emmylou’ amongst the evening’s many
Sisters Joanna and Klara Soderberg clearly enjoyed the
evening as much as the audience, the 24- and 22-year-olds having already
produced some superb material.
It’s refreshing to see young musicians carrying the torch
for music where influences, in addition to Simon & Garfunkel, are clearly
the likes of The Mamas and the Papas, Klara at times sounding very like Mama
Cass – and that is praise indeed.
