Genesis fans still divide into the pre- and post-Peter Gabriel era devotees.

Lead guitarist Steve Hackett was evidently amongst those who preferred the band with its original front man, as he remained with them for just two more albums before his own departure.

With Phil Collins as vocalist, Genesis’s remaining seven albums all made the top three, five of them topping the charts – but it was a very different, much more commercial sound to the six studio and three live albums Hackett played on.

Born one day before Gabriel, Hackett, like the original front-man, has always been a serious musician more interested in the music than the star-maker machinery behind the popular song – as Joni Mitchell beautifully captured the dilemma of the modern music world.

Broadening his repertoire with influences from jazz, classical, blues and world music, Hackett brings a two-and-a-half hour show to Sage Gateshead on 17 May.

It’s the penultimate date of the UK leg of a tour with the final night at the London Palladium already sold out.

Having already played gigs with this set in the US, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, Hackett is backed by a five-piece band and divides the performance into two sections. Featuring three numbers from his latest album, ‘The Night Siren’, in an opening half of newer material the second part of the show largely covers the earlier part of Hackett’s career.

In particular this focuses on the last Genesis album he played on, ‘Wind & Wuthering,’ now 40-years-old but still undoubtedly about to be lapped up by those for who wouldn’t give ‘We Can’t Dance’ house room but still love ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’.

Sage Gateshead 17 May If you didn’t see your local balding but long-haired, ageing prog-rocker on Wednesday night it was because he was at Sage One. Clad in a uniform of black tee-shirts and leather waistcoats an army of early Genesis fans descended on Gateshead to see Steve Hackett.  They weren’t disappointed as the guitarist who played on half a dozen early Genesis studio albums and three live ones turned on the style. As you’d expect from a tour that has already been...
